The Greencut GLM660SX is positioned in the lowest segment of the thermal mower market. Its small-displacement 4-stroke OHV engine and 39 cm cutting width make it suitable for gardens not exceeding a few hundred square meters. We examined its technical features to determine whether this low price comes at the cost of significant compromises or acceptable concessions.

OHV Engine Block and Torque Range on the Greencut GLM660SX

The OHV (overhead valve) engine mounted on the GLM660SX has a structural advantage over older side-valve blocks: a more compact combustion chamber, better thermal efficiency, and slightly lower operating temperatures. With a modest displacement, this architectural choice is relevant for maintaining sufficient torque at low speeds, where the blade encounters the most resistance in dense grass.

We observe that the useful RPM range remains narrow. The engine delivers its power within a fairly limited window, which requires not letting the grass grow too high between cuts. On short grass at mid-height, the engine runs smoothly. On tall, wet grass, the limits quickly become apparent: the RPM drops, the cut becomes uneven, and the risk of stalling increases.

We consulted our review of the Greencut mower in detail, which confirms this analysis: the machine performs well on regularly maintained lawns, much less so when tackling neglected areas.

Cutting Height Adjustment and Blade Quality

The GLM660SX offers several cutting height positions, adjustable via a lever on the wheels. The adjustment range extends from approximately 25 to 75 mm, covering the common uses of a residential garden. The lowest setting is suitable for ornamental lawns, while the higher positions allow for mowing more rugged terrain without scalping the ground.

The adjustment mechanism relies on an individual notch system per axle. This choice, common in entry-level models, requires manual verification that all four wheels are set to the same position. A one-notch offset between the front and rear axles results in a diagonal cut, often difficult to detect with the naked eye at the moment.

Rotary Blade and Predictable Wear

The original blade is a standard rotary steel blade. On this type of mower, the blade is the consumable to monitor closely. Sharpening at the beginning and middle of the season maintains a clean cut. A dull blade tears the grass blade instead of cutting it, which yellows the lawn and encourages fungal diseases.

The availability of replacement blades deserves attention. Greencut, a Spanish brand primarily distributed online, does not benefit from the parts network of a manufacturer like Briggs & Stratton or Honda. Checking the availability of wear parts before purchase is a precaution not to be overlooked, especially for use over multiple seasons.

Grass Collection Bag and Mulching Option on the GLM660SX

The grass collection bag has a modest capacity. On a lawn of a few hundred square meters, multiple emptying sessions are necessary. The bag fills up more quickly when the grass is wet, as the clippings compact poorly and take up more volume.

  • In dry mowing on short grass, the bag lasts for reasonable lengths before needing to be emptied
  • In wet mowing or on tall grass, the emptying frequency easily doubles, extending the working time
  • The rear ejection into the bag works correctly as long as the engine’s air filter remains clean and the RPM does not drop

Mulching is not a native function of the GLM660SX in its standard configuration. Some users install a homemade plug on the discharge outlet to shred the clippings on the spot, but this practice is not recommended by the manufacturer and can clog the cutting deck.

Noise Emissions and Regulatory Compliance of the Thermal Mower

Thermal mowers used outdoors are subject to the European Directive 2000/14/EC on noise emissions. This regulation requires labeling of the guaranteed acoustic power level (LWA) directly on the machine. Before any purchase, we recommend checking for this mention on the label or in the technical documentation.

On a mower of this displacement, the noise level remains within the usual range for entry-level thermal models, significantly above electric or battery mowers. Therefore, use is subject to municipal regulations that govern mowing hours, generally limited to weekdays and daytime slots.

Engine Maintenance and Realistic Longevity

An entry-level 4-stroke OHV engine requires rigorous seasonal maintenance to last:

  • Engine oil change at least once per season, more often with intensive use
  • Replacement of the air filter as soon as it shows visible signs of clogging
  • Inspection and replacement of the spark plug if starting becomes difficult
  • Cleaning of the cutting deck after each use to prevent the accumulation of debris that corrodes the steel

Without this maintenance, the realistic lifespan does not exceed two to three seasons. With serious follow-up, the machine can last significantly longer, provided that necessary consumables are available.

Ergonomics and Maneuverability for Small Areas

The GLM660SX is a manually pushed mower, without wheel propulsion. Its lightweight design works in its favor on flat terrain. Maneuverability is its true strong point: tight turns around flower beds, narrow passages between borders, and U-turns at the end of rows are all done without excessive effort.

The handlebar is adjustable and foldable, making it easier to store in a garden shed or narrow garage. In a small garden, the mowing duration remains short, and the posture does not pose any particular issues.

The Greencut GLM660SX fulfills its role within a specific perimeter: a small garden mowed regularly, with a user willing to maintain a basic thermal engine and anticipate the supply of wear parts. Outside of this framework, its power limits and the capacity of the bag quickly become apparent. An honest mower for its price positioning, as long as you do not ask more of it than what it was designed for.
